CurrentReport Blog The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 10-year-old boy on charges of strangling his 10-year-old playmate to death during a football match. The incident, which occurred in the Ejigbo area, has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Command, confirmed the arrest to the press, shedding light on the tragic event that unfolded on Friday evening. According to reports received by the Ejigbo Police Division around 6:20 p.m., the altercation took place at Oluwole Street, Powerline, where the mother of the deceased boy operates her shop.
The father of the victim, Israel Ogunleye, bravely came forward to report the harrowing incident to the authorities. He recounted how his son was engaged in a spirited game of football with his peers when an argument escalated with one of the boys, also aged 10. Shockingly, the altercation turned fatal when the suspect allegedly seized the victim by the neck, strangling him until he succumbed to the injuries.
Upon receiving the distressing report, a team of detectives swiftly responded, documenting the scene and the victim’s body. Tragically, despite efforts to save him, Israel Ogunleye was pronounced dead upon arrival at General Hospital Isolo.
The gravity of the situation has led to the detention of the 10-year-old suspect, who remains in police custody pending further investigation. The authorities have initiated proceedings to conduct a post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of death.
