Kaduna Banditry Takes a Heavy Toll on Faith: Over 200 Churches Closed and 23 Pastors Lost

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) recently revealed shocking statistics, indicating that more than 200 churches have been forced to shut their doors, and 23 pastors have tragically lost their lives due to these relentless attacks over the past four years.

 

 

 

 

 

In a confidence-building meeting with Christian leaders from all 23 Local Government Areas of Kaduna State, Reverend Joseph Hayab, the Chairman of CAN in Kaduna State, painted a bleak picture of the situation. He disclosed that the closures primarily affected churches in areas such as Birni Gwari, Chukun, and Kajuru. The Baptist denomination alone witnessed the closure of over 115 churches, a staggering number that underscores the gravity of the situation.

The haunting truth is that many pastors have had to abandon their congregations, leaving empty pews and silenced hymns. These spiritual leaders, coming from churches that were forced to close due to security concerns, now find themselves displaced and unable to continue their divine calling.

The crisis has not spared any denomination. From ECWA to Assemblies of God, the Catholic Church, and numerous others, the Christian community in Kaduna has faced the painful reality of shutting down places of worship, places that once served as spiritual anchors for their congregants.

The root cause of this heartbreaking situation is the prevailing insecurity in Kaduna State. The relentless attacks by bandits have left communities in fear and turmoil, forcing the closure of these sacred spaces.

The Christian leaders emphasized the urgent need for peace and security to allow the reopening of these churches and the return of displaced pastors to their congregations.
