CurrentReport Blog Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North Senatorial District has strongly condemned the tragic killings of soldiers in the Okuama community, Ughelli South LGA, Delta State. The incident, which occurred during a peace mission, has sparked outrage and calls for immediate action.

According to a report, the Nigerian Army disclosed that a group of soldiers dispatched to facilitate peace in the troubled Okuama community fell victim to yet-to-be-identified youths, resulting in the loss of lives of a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 soldiers.

Expressing his dismay over the unfortunate incident, Senator Ned Nwoko voiced his concerns to the press in Abuja, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and justice. He described the news of the 16 soldiers’ tragic demise as deeply saddening and unacceptable, highlighting the imperative for a thorough investigation to uncover the perpetrators and hold them accountable under the law.

“It is deeply regrettable that violence has once again marred the peace in Delta State. The loss of these brave soldiers during a peacekeeping mission is a grave tragedy,” Senator Nwoko stated.

He urged both the state and federal governments to expedite the establishment of an all-encompassing panel to delve into the root causes of the conflict between the two communities. The inquiry, he emphasized, should encompass the rationale behind the military intervention and explore avenues for preventing such incidents in the future.

“An inclusive investigation is paramount to identifying sustainable solutions and averting similar tragedies. We must address the underlying issues fueling the conflict and work towards lasting peace,” Senator Nwoko asserted.

In his appeal to all parties involved, Senator Nwoko urged for restraint and a cessation of hostilities, emphasizing the futility of resorting to violence and reprisal attacks. He called for dialogue, understanding, and cooperation to pave the way for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence among the communities.

“It is crucial for all parties involved to maintain calm and refrain from resorting to killings and reprisal attacks, as these actions only exacerbate the problem.

“Those responsible for these senseless acts must be identified and brought to justice.

“But we must prioritise the safety and well-being of innocent villagers and spare them from the horrors of vengeful onslaughts.

“Its disconcerting that Delta has become a theatre of mass killings, from last week’s tragic incident involving police officers and herdsmen to this recent killing of soldiers.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the military personnel. Justice will prevail,” Nwoko added.
