CurrentReport Blog In a startling turn of events, aggrieved motorcycle riders have brought major roads and markets in Asaba and Okayama, within the Oshimili South and Oshimili North Local Government Areas of Delta State, to a standstill. The protest, ignited by the deaths of their colleagues, swiftly escalated into a display of anger and destruction, leaving local businesses and properties damaged in its wake.

The demonstration unfolded early on Monday, as infuriated riders took to the streets, venting their grievances and wreaking havoc on the cityscape. Notably, the Midwifery Market in Okpanam and the Delta State Post Primary Education Board along Sunnis Road, Asaba, bore the brunt of the protesters’ fury, with reports emerging of vandalism and property damage.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the deaths of two motorcycle riders during a confrontation with the State Task Force on Sunday. Edafe further detailed the deployment of police officers to quell the unrest, emphasizing the necessity of containing the protest before it spirals further out of control.

Edafe wrote in a post on his X handle, “There was a violent protest this morning by Okada riders who had issue last night with the state task force that led to the death of two persons.

“They mobilised in the their numbers this morning, destroying properties and beating people, hence our men were deployed to control the situation before it turns to something else.”
