The group’s condemnation stems from a viral report circulating on social media, implicating the Minister of Defence for State and former governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, in purportedly providing assistance to the Ado Aliero-led bandits wreaking havoc in the region.
According to the group, Governor Lawal, who ascended to power on promises of restoring security within a hundred days, has been accused of exploiting the insecurity narrative during his campaign for political gains. However, since assuming office, Lawal has purportedly fallen short on delivering his commitments, leaving the populace vulnerable to incessant attacks.
In a statement attributed to its President, Abubakar Hassan Kankia, the Arewa Youth for Peace and Security lamented Lawal’s alleged abandonment of his constitutional duties, opting instead to embark on international trips while neglecting the pressing security concerns at home. The group further accused Lawal of squandering public funds on propagating fabricated allegations against his predecessor, Bello Matawalle, in a bid to divert attention from his administration’s shortcomings.
The group did not mince words in denouncing Lawal’s leadership, branding it as “confused” and attributing the surge in insecurity directly to his administration’s ineptitude. Social media clips depicting bandits praising Lawal further underscore the severity of the situation, with Zamfara State allegedly turning into a sanctuary for criminal elements under his watch.
As tensions escalate, the Arewa Youth for Peace and Security warns of dire consequences should Lawal continue to evade accountability and prolong his tenure, as it allegedly emboldens the nefarious activities of terrorists operating with impunity in the region.
