CurrentReport Blog In a stern reaffirmation of its commitment to public safety, the Lagos State Government has declared its intention to demolish buildings failing to meet the city’s integrity standards. This announcement follows a devastating fire outbreak at Dosunmu Market, where no fewer than 14 structures were engulfed, causing millions of Naira in losses.

Lamenting the preventable nature of the disaster, Lagos State Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for stringent enforcement of building regulations. During his inspection of the scene, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed concern over the conversion of residential units into makeshift warehouses, exacerbating the risks associated with such structures.

“The Dosunmu Market incident underscores the grave consequences of negligence,” remarked Governor Sanwo-Olu. “We cannot afford to compromise on safety measures. Any property found to pose a threat to lives and property will be dealt with decisively.”

The fire, believed to have originated from a generator refueling mishap in one of the buildings, quickly spread due to the presence of multiple generators within the complex. Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Authority, confirmed the sequence of events, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance in fire safety practices.

In response to the tragedy, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced the indefinite closure of Dosunmu Market and pledged government support for affected individuals and businesses. However, he reiterated that adherence to construction regulations remains paramount, warning against the proliferation of unsafe structures.

“We must prioritize the well-being of our citizens and the integrity of our city,” Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized. “The Lagos State Government will not hesitate to take necessary action against those flouting building codes.”

As Lagos continues to grow and develop, ensuring the structural integrity of buildings becomes increasingly crucial
