CurrentReport Blog In a bid to diffuse tensions following a tumultuous session, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, issued a public apology on Tuesday for the disorderly conduct witnessed during Monday’s plenary. The session saw the indefinite suspension of three lawmakers over alleged involvement in a plot to impeach the Speaker and other principal officers.
The suspended lawmakers, identified as Okogbe Donald (PDP, Akoko-Edo II), Addeh Isibor (APC, Esan North-East I), and Iyamu Bright (PDP, Orhionnwon II), faced allegations of not only conspiring against the leadership but also of resorting to unconventional means by allegedly bringing in native doctors to the assembly premises on May 1st, an act labeled as “fetish” by Speaker Agbebaku.
Expressing regret over the commotion, Speaker Agbebaku stated, “I wish to apologize to the staff of this assembly for what happened on Monday during plenary. It was not our intention to create tension in the house.” He emphasized the assembly’s commitment to upholding decorum and assured that such incidents would not recur.
Meanwhile, efforts towards reconciliation are underway, as undisclosed lawmakers held prolonged discussions with the suspended members, seeking a resolution to the impasse. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one member revealed that the focus of the discussions was to find a pathway towards lifting the suspension, deemed by some as unconstitutional and detrimental to the assembly’s reputation.
