CurrentReport Blog The Ogun State Government has issued a strong warning to illegal miners and dredgers operating within its jurisdiction to cease their activities or face stringent legal consequences and severe sanctions.

This directive was announced by the Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Adebola Sofela, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, Commissioner Sofela emphasized the importance of the mining sector for its contributions to revenue and employment.

“Mining is a win-win if done responsibly, but it becomes destructive and disruptive when irresponsibly carried out. The financial impact on the government and the community is substantial. We all have a responsibility to protect our environment and ensure compliance with regulations,” Sofela stated.

The Commissioner highlighted concerns over some miners and dredgers operating with expired documents, stressing the need for all operators to undergo thorough screening and obtain the necessary clearances before resuming activities.

Sofela reminded the stakeholders of the Ministry’s suspension of mining and dredging activities across the state since March 28, 2024. This suspension was to facilitate a comprehensive review and enhancement of operational guidelines in line with the administration’s policies.

He also introduced a new payment template, urging operators to adopt it for smoother transactions and to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) obligations.

Ebenezer Aina, responding on behalf of the miners and dredgers, praised the government’s commitment to maintaining operational standards in the sector.

As the Ogun State Government strengthens its resolve to regulate mining and dredging activities, it calls on all operators to adhere strictly to legal requirements and environmental standards, ensuring sustainable and responsible exploitation of natural resources.
