CurrentReport Blog In a show of patriotic spirit, young men and women under the banner of Adamawa Concerned Youths took to the streets of Yola on Tuesday to celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, proclaiming that the nation has much to be proud of since gaining independence in 1960.

The youths organized a solidarity street walk after the Adamawa State Government abruptly canceled its official Independence Day plans. The government had initially prepared cultural troupes and mobilized schools for a march at Mahmud Ribadu Square in Yola. However, after a security meeting held by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and service heads late on Monday, the state government decided to cancel the event due to security concerns.

Despite the cancellation, the Adamawa Concerned Youths group filled the quiet streets of Yola, highlighting the progress Nigeria has made over the years. Convener of the group, Yakubu Umar Girei, praised the efforts of President Bola Tinubu in addressing the nation’s challenges, citing fiscal reforms and economic resurgence under his administration.

“While the effect of some of the policies can be felt, other critical successes which cannot be seen or touched are also contributing immensely to Nigeria’s socio-economic rebirth,” Girei stated during the walk.

He added that, despite the challenges, Nigeria has witnessed significant infrastructural and social development since 1960, with improvements in roads, education, and other institutions that are worth celebrating.
