The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has extended his congratulations to Senator Monday Okpebholo, the governor-elect, on his victory in the just-concluded Edo State governorship election. Despite being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Agbebaku’s congratulatory message comes in contrast to the position of his party and its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who alleged that the election was rigged in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In the election results, Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, who garnered 247,274 votes. Despite his party’s refusal to accept the results, Agbebaku acknowledged the victory and advised the governor-elect to avoid being influenced by sycophants. Speaking during a plenary session on Wednesday, he stated, “The governor-elect is for Edo people, not just for the APC. I pray that sycophants do not mislead him.”
Interestingly, Agbebaku, who represents Owan West constituency under the PDP, saw his local government fall to the APC in the election, with the APC polling 12,277 votes against PDP’s 11,284.
