CurrentReport Blog In response to the alarming rise in drug abuse among young people, the Edo State Government has launched a comprehensive sensitisation campaign aimed at curbing the trend. The programme, initiated by the Ministry of Social Development and Gender, seeks to address the pressing issue of substance abuse, particularly among schoolchildren.
Mrs. Barbara Osobajo, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, flagged off the campaign in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area. Represented by Mr. Sylvester Okeguale, Director of the Rehabilitation Department, Osobajo emphasized that the programme will extend to Edo Central and Edo South senatorial districts later this month.
The initiative, tagged “Catch Them Young,” focuses on educating children, parents, and community leaders about the dangers of drug abuse. Osobajo underscored the urgency of tackling the issue, stating, “Our children are the future, but the future is now under threat due to the alarming rate of drug abuse among young people. We must act now to prevent this menace from destroying our youth.”
Local government officials, including Zibiri Muhizu Marvelous, Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, praised the state’s efforts and stressed the importance of community engagement. Marvelous noted that addressing drug abuse requires collaboration between parents, educational institutions, and local organisations.
During the event, facilitator Mr. Purpose Ehigie warned of the dangers posed by substances like prescription medications and alcohol. Ehigie called for vigilance and highlighted the need for early intervention and education to empower young people to resist peer pressure and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
