CurrentReport Blog The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has addressed the recent claims of an invasion of Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu by its officers. On Tuesday, October 15, EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, released a statement to clarify the events surrounding the incident that occurred on Monday, October 14.
According to the EFCC, four officers from its Enugu Zonal Directorate went to the radio station to invite Favour Ekoh, the host of Prime Time, for questioning over her alleged involvement in a ₦700 million Ponzi scheme. Ekoh is reportedly under investigation for fraud linked to approximately 50 victims who were persuaded to invest in a scheme known as “Life Trading” by Leverage Index Limited. The victims were promised a 10% return on their investments, but the company allegedly closed without returning the funds.
The EFCC stated that their officers were obstructed and locked within the premises of the radio station. After the officers identified themselves and explained their mission to the station’s general manager, Bamikole Omoyomi, the team was blocked from leaving. This led to a rescue operation, resulting in the arrest of Ekoh, Omoyomi, and two security guards.
The commission emphasized that Ekoh was not arrested during a live broadcast, and the station’s lawful operations were not disrupted. The general manager and security guards were later released after making statements. The EFCC also called on media bodies, including the International Press Institute (IPI) and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), to review the station’s conduct, stressing that obstruction of its officers’ duties is unacceptable.
