CurrentReport Blog Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has called on stakeholders to work closely to develop and implement policies that will ensure sustainable food production in Nigeria. This call comes amid rising concerns over the high cost of living in the country. Governor Bago made this statement through his deputy, Yakubu Garba, during the commemoration of the 2024 World Food Day at the Legbo Kitigi International Centre in Minna, with the theme “Safer Foods and Better Health.”

Governor Bago emphasized that the Niger State government is collaborating with several international partners to modernize the agricultural value chain, focusing on boosting the production of major crops such as rice, cassava, maize, and sorghum. These collaborations aim to enhance human capacity, infrastructure development, and value addition.

He stated, “Nigeria faces a critical challenge with the high cost of living, driven by economic realities, insecurity, and climate change, all of which aggravate food insecurity. This threatens the survival of the most vulnerable among us.”

Governor Bago further urged local and international investors to seize the opportunities in the state’s agricultural sector to help accelerate its transformation.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Musa Salihu Bosso, also noted that preliminary reports on the wet season’s agricultural activities are promising despite early challenges. He added that the state has attracted investments worth billions of naira, with partnerships poised to revolutionize Niger’s agricultural sector.

Bosso affirmed that the state is open to collaborations that will further expand agricultural activities, with the goal of becoming a leading food producer, not only for local consumption but also for export.
