CurrentReport Blog The Lagos State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council has expressed surprise at the recent announcement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approving a minimum wage of N85,000 for workers in the state. The council, in a statement signed by its chairpersons and secretaries, noted that they were not expecting the public declaration at this time.
Representatives of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, Olusegun Balogun and Aladetan Abiodun, were among the signatories to the statement issued on Thursday.
Governor Sanwo-Olu had earlier revealed during a television interview that his administration would raise the minimum wage to N85,000. The union, however, said they first learned of the wage approval through the media.
The council clarified the sequence of events, explaining that on Monday, October 16, 2024, they were invited to a meeting at short notice to discuss the proposed minimum wage. Although they attended, they insisted that all key stakeholders must be present for formal negotiations to take place. The meeting was subsequently rescheduled for October 21, 2024.
The union emphasized that while the public announcement of the N85,000 figure came unexpectedly, this did not challenge the governor’s authority to make statements on matters of governance. They reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring inclusive discussions on the wage increase in the spirit of social dialogue.
This development comes as Lagos workers await further discussions on the wage increase, which is expected to impact public service employees across the state.
