CurrentReport Blog The Nigerian House of Representatives has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to relocate its local government offices to more secure and neutral locations, ensuring a fair and independent electoral process. The directive followed the adoption of a motion presented by Rep. Sunday Nnamchi (LP-Enugu) on Wednesday.
The motion, titled “Call for Relocation of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Local Government Offices to Neutral Locations,” highlighted concerns that INEC’s current office locations within local government headquarters could compromise its autonomy. Nnamchi argued that the proximity to council chairmen, particularly in areas dominated by a single political party, risks influencing INEC’s impartiality in conducting elections.
To address these issues, the House advised that INEC allocate funds for this relocation in the 2025 budget. The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, directed the Committee on Electoral Matters to collaborate with INEC and other stakeholders to oversee compliance and report back within four weeks.
