CurrentReport Blog The Nigerian House of Representatives has issued a strong warning to CEOs of government agencies and private sector organizations over failing to appear at a public hearing on the use of $2 billion in renewable energy grants. The hearing, held in Abuja, saw the attendance of only two out of 25 invited CEOs, prompting the Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, Victor Afam (LP, Anambra), to caution against disregarding the National Assembly’s authority.
Among the agencies whose CEOs did not attend were major bodies such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s Renewable Energy Projects, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. Afam emphasized that the hearing was not a witch-hunt, stressing the legislature’s constitutional right to seek accountability for public resources.
The House has mandated all absentee CEOs to appear on November 6 to provide clarity on renewable energy funding from 2015 to the present. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas reiterated that the committee’s focus is on ensuring transparency and aligning investments in renewable energy with Nigeria’s national goals, especially as reliable electricity access remains a challenge for many Nigerians despite substantial investments.
