CurrentReport Blog In a call for greater support for Nigerian educational institutions, former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has urged wealthy Nigerians to donate to their alma maters. Obi emphasized that Nigeria can build a strong educational system if affluent citizens contribute financially to schools they once attended. He made the statement during a visit to St. John of God Secondary School in Awka, Anambra State, where he donated a cheque of N15 million on behalf of an alumnus.

The donation was made possible by Mrs. Bridget Egodi Akigwe, a former student of the school, who Obi reconnected with in the United States. Reflecting on their conversation, Obi said, “I asked her what she has done for the school since she left, and she said nothing. I told her if she needs to give back, she can start small.” Following their discussion, Akigwe provided the N15 million donation, which Obi presented to the school.

Obi highlighted the importance of alumni giving back, noting that even small contributions can significantly impact educational institutions. “If we all support the institutions where we studied, we can help them become great,” Obi said, encouraging current students to focus on their studies and strive for success.

In addition to his advocacy for educational support, Obi reiterated the importance of health as a foundation for national growth, emphasizing that a healthy population is essential for productivity. His remarks were acknowledged by Rt. Rev. Dr. Paulinus Ezeokafor, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, who commended Obi for his continued contributions to healthcare and educational institutions. Ezeokafor praised Obi’s consistent use of personal resources to support hospitals and schools, saying, “We know that what you are giving us is from your personal pocket because you are no longer in government.”
