President Tinubu Confers Nigeria’s GCON Honour on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

The honour was presented on Sunday, November 17, at the Nigeria-India Bilateral Meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Strengthening Nigeria-India Relations

The meeting marks a significant milestone in the rekindling of diplomatic ties between Nigeria and India. Speaking at the event, President Tinubu highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two nations and expressed a desire to deepen bilateral cooperation.

“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries,” Tinubu stated.

Recognition of Democratic Leadership

President Tinubu praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, commending him for winning three consecutive elections in India’s diverse and complex democracy.

“You represent a very strong commitment to democratic values and norms. Winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much,” Tinubu remarked.

The GCON award is Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, typically reserved for distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to the country or global affairs.

Tinubu emphasized that the conferment symbolizes Nigeria’s appreciation and commitment to its partnership with India.

“This signifies Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner,” Tinubu concluded.
