CurrentReport Blog Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has issued a strong challenge to Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), over his recent remarks targeting the Southwest. Adeleke accused Ganduje of attempting to destabilise the region and undermining unity in the name of political ambition.
The controversy stems from Ganduje’s statement after the APC’s victory in the Ondo State governorship election, where he declared Osun and Oyo states as the party’s next targets.
Reacting through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke criticised Ganduje’s comments, describing them as a threat to democracy and an attempt to incite conflict.
“As a well-read politician, one would have expected Dr. Ganduje to know that electoral contests depend mostly on local indexes and factors,” the statement read. “What was obtained in Edo and Ondo is surely different from political facts on the ground in Osun State.”
Adeleke argued that Ganduje’s actions contradict the unity needed to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who hails from the Southwest. He urged the APC leader to refrain from destabilising the president’s home region, adding that such remarks could undermine Yoruba solidarity.
Governor Adeleke highlighted the uniqueness of Osun’s political landscape, warning Ganduje that strategies used in other states would not work in Osun. He invited the APC leader to study the political dynamics of Osun State before making sweeping declarations.
“If Dr. Ganduje truly loves Mr. President, why is he pushing to destabilise the president’s home zone through open threats to violate electoral law and deny the electorate their rights to vote and be voted for?” Adeleke questioned.
Governor Adeleke also reminded Ganduje of the general consensus among the Yoruba people, which supports President Tinubu across party lines. He called for political competition to be conducted within the bounds of electoral law, without inciting division or conflict.
