Adeniyi announced the initiative during a media briefing on Wednesday in Yola. He assured that the proceeds from the sales would be fully remitted to the Federation Account, reflecting the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Massive Seizure of Smuggled Fuel Products
This measure follows the interception of a massive haul of smuggled fuel products intended for illegal export. According to Comptroller Hussain Ejibunu, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, the seized items include:
- 1,124 jerrycans (25, 40, and 60 litres each)
- 53 drums (200 litres each)
- 21,000 litres transported in two tankers
In total, the seized fuel amounts to 71,965 litres, valued at over N81.5 million.
Strategic Border Operations
Ejibunu revealed that most of the seizures occurred along the Cameroon-Nigeria border, emphasizing the importance of intelligence and surveillance operations in curbing smuggling.
“This initiative significantly eases fuel scarcity in the region and addresses the impact of subsidy removal on residents,” Ejibunu stated.
Support from National Security Authorities
Ejibunu commended Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu for their unwavering support in ensuring the success of Operation Whirlwind. The operation is part of a broader strategy aimed at combating illegal oil bunkering and smuggling activities.
Prosecution of Suspects and Regulatory Compliance
A suspect linked to the smuggling activities has been arrested and is currently undergoing prosecution. Additionally, 13 of the 14 intercepted tankers have been handed over to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for further action.
