CurrentReport Blog Stakeholders in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector have called for increased collaboration among southeastern states to drive investment and accelerate economic transformation in the region.

This was the central theme at the 36th Annual General Meeting of the Anambra/Ebonyi/Enugu chapter of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), held in Enugu on Friday. The event, titled “Revitalising Nigeria’s Economy Through Manufacturing-Driven Non-Oil Export,” underscored the vital role of manufacturing in diversifying Nigeria’s economy.

Key Highlights of the Event

Lady Ada Chukwudozie, chairperson of MAN for Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi, emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to shift its focus toward manufacturing-driven exports. She warned that the sector faces extinction due to challenges such as inadequate funding, high production costs, and a hostile investment climate.

Chukwudozie drew comparisons to Singapore, a nation that achieved economic growth through innovation and non-oil exports. She proposed prioritizing infrastructure, education, and research while adopting policies such as tax incentives, trade agreements, and easier access to finance.

Dr. Dakuku Peterside, former Director-General of NIMASA, delivered a keynote address highlighting the potential of export-driven manufacturing to foster economic growth, reduce oil dependency, and create jobs.
“For manufacturers to thrive, we need robust infrastructure—railways, seaports, and road networks—alongside stable monetary policies, competitive power supply, and export incentives,” Peterside stated.

Calls for Regional Collaboration

Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, emphasized the importance of unity among southeastern states to address shared challenges and leverage their strengths.
“Southeast states must share ideas and invest in manufacturing. In Anambra, we are pioneering agricultural reforms, particularly in palm and coconut farming, to diversify our economy,” he noted.

Event chairman Chief Martin Agbaso criticized past policies like the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) for discouraging exports and favoring imports. He urged local governments to harness natural resources for sustainable development and economic resilience.

Awards and Gala Night

The event concluded with awards recognizing distinguished Nigerians for their contributions to the manufacturing sector, followed by a gala night featuring entertainment and networking opportunities.

The conference highlighted the need for actionable steps, including infrastructural development, policy reforms, and strategic partnerships, to revitalize Nigeria’s manufacturing sector and foster economic growth.
