CurrentReport Blog In a move to fulfill his inaugural promises, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved and carried out the swearing-in of three High Court judges-designate, who were left unappointed by the immediate past governor, Godwin Obaseki.

The judges—Ojo Maureen Osa, Godwin Jeff Okundamiya, and Edoghogho Eboigbe—were among eight judges recommended for appointment by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in June 2023. However, only five of the eight were sworn in by Obaseki in May 2024, leaving the trio awaiting official induction.

During his inaugural address on November 12, 2024, Governor Okpebholo directed the state’s Chief Judge, Daniel Okungbowa, to investigate the delay in their swearing-in. Today, December 2, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., the swearing-in ceremony took place at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Benin City.

The Secretary to the State Government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, issued a statement affirming the governor’s commitment to the rule of law and the separation of powers. According to Ikhilor, Governor Okpebholo’s decision underscores his dedication to strengthening the judiciary to ensure justice and fairness for all.

This move aligns with the governor’s pledge to uphold constitutional principles and enhance the judiciary’s capacity to deliver timely and equitable justice.

The NJC’s recommendation in mid-2023 had approved the appointment of eight judges to bolster the judicial system in Edo State. While Obaseki swore in five judges, the remaining three were delayed for undisclosed reasons, prompting Okpebholo to address the issue immediately upon assuming office.

The newly sworn-in judges are expected to contribute significantly to the efficient administration of justice in Edo State.
