CurrentReport Blog In a historic milestone for the Nigerian Navy (NN), Lt. Changfe Maigari has become the first female pilot since the Navy’s establishment in 1964. Her remarkable achievement was celebrated during the 2024 NN Ceremonial Sunset held at the Naval Training Command Headquarters (HQ NAVTRAC) in Ebube-Eleme, Rivers State, where she was awarded the prestigious ‘Pilot Wing.’
Hailing from Langtang North Local Government Area in Plateau State, Lt. Maigari was born in Kaduna. She is married and a mother to a daughter. Her journey into aviation began after graduating from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 2016 as part of the pioneering group of 20 female regular cadets.
A Trailblazing Career
After her commissioning as a Sub Lieutenant, Maigari served aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship Unity. She distinguished herself early in her career, graduating as the Best Graduating Cadet in Academics at the NDA and earning the Gold Medal Navy award. In 2019, she completed her Sub Lieutenant Technical Course as the overall best.
Despite challenges during her rigorous training, she remained focused and determined. “There were moments when it seemed I might not succeed, but I persevered,” she shared.
Inspiration for Women in the Military
Lt. Maigari’s accomplishment is not only a personal victory but a beacon of hope for women in the military. “Becoming the first female pilot in the Nigerian Navy feels surreal and is a significant milestone. I hope my success inspires other women in the military and young girls aspiring to join the armed forces to persist,” she said.
She credits her success to God, her colleagues, and her family for their unwavering support throughout her journey.
A Dream Rooted in Passion
Growing up in a military environment, Maigari was inspired by her father, a Nigerian Air Force officer. She pursued her dream of becoming a military pilot with unwavering resolve. “From an early age, I aspired to become a military pilot, and when the opportunity to join the Navy arose, I did not hesitate,” she noted.
