CurrentReport Blog The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed circulating reports on social media claiming that its National Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, passed away in a London hospital.
In a statement released by Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the Commission described the news as false and urged the public to disregard it.
INEC’s Response to the Rumors
The fake story, which first surfaced on Monday, December 9, 2024, falsely alleged that Prof. Yakubu had died. Refuting the claims, Oyekanmi clarified:
“Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale and hearty. In fact, he has not travelled to London in the last two years.”
The statement emphasized that Yakubu had been actively involved in INEC’s operations during the week. He attended an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday, December 11, and chaired a Commission meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, December 12, 2024. Both events were widely covered by the media.
A Recurring Misinformation Trend
INEC noted that this is not the first time such baseless rumors have been spread. A similar fake story about Yakubu’s death circulated in 2021.
“Three years later, they are spreading the same rumour again. Those who indulge in this practice, as well as those who spread it, should be mindful of its effect not only on the individual but also the wider society,” the statement added.
The Danger of Fake News
The Commission highlighted the dangers of misinformation, especially when it targets public institutions and figures. INEC reaffirmed its commitment to working with credible media professionals to combat the spread of fake news and protect public trust.
INEC’s Ongoing Activities
As Nigeria gears up for future elections, Prof. Yakubu remains actively engaged in strengthening the nation’s electoral processes. INEC has reassured Nigerians that its leadership is fully operational and focused on delivering credible elections.
