CurrentReport Blog The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu, has emphasized the need for quality leadership to sustain the Igbo’s status as one of Africa’s leading lights. Speaking during his inaugural meeting with the National Executive Committee (NEC) at the National Secretariat, Enugu, Chukwu called for the recruitment of accomplished individuals to drive Ohanaeze’s mission forward.
In a statement issued by Ohanaeze’s spokesperson, Alex Ogbonnia, Chukwu stressed that the effectiveness and viability of any organization or government depend on the quality of its leadership. He commended the Imeobi Ohanaeze’s decision to establish a screening committee to ensure that the incoming NEC comprises individuals with sound education, integrity, vision, and deep knowledge of Igbo cultural and ethical values.
Recalling the leadership of Dr. M. I. Okpara, Chukwu highlighted the achievements of Igbo unity during that era, including advancements in education, agriculture, and infrastructure. “During the Okpara regime, almost all schools, churches, markets, hospitals, and other social facilities were built through organized town unions. Eastern Nigeria became one of the fastest-growing economies in the world,” Chukwu said.
However, he expressed regret over the perceived neglect of responsibilities by subsequent Igbo leaders, leading to a decline in food security, unity, and social development.
Chukwu urged the NEC to prioritize internal peace, unity, and credible governance, which he identified as the foundation for reviving the Igbo’s economic and social prominence. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Ohanaeze remains a beacon of progress for the Igbo people.
