CurrentRepprt Blog A Brazilian court has ordered the removal of Adele’s 2015 hit song Million Years Ago from all radio and streaming platforms worldwide due to alleged copyright infringement. The decision follows a lawsuit filed by Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes, who accused the British singer of copying his 1996 classic Mulheres.

Judge Victor Torres ruled in favor of Geraes, who claimed Adele’s song bore striking similarities to the track he composed for Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila’s 1995 album. Geraes is seeking $160,000 in lost royalties, moral damages, and a songwriting credit for the disputed track.

The ruling also imposes strict penalties for non-compliance. Brazilian subsidiaries of Sony and Universal, Adele’s record labels, face fines of $8,000 per infraction if the song is not promptly removed from platforms in the region.

The case has drawn significant attention in the global music industry, with experts debating the similarities between the two songs. Adele and her representatives have yet to issue a public statement regarding the ruling.

This legal battle highlights the growing scrutiny of copyright issues in the music industry and raises questions about the processes for verifying originality in musical compositions.
