CurrentReportBlog: In a significant move to safeguard its national identity system, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has uncovered and removed over 6,000 illegally registered Nigeriens from its database. The discovery aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s push to clean up the National Social Register, ensuring accurate data for critical social investment programs like cash transfers and student loans.
Cracking Down on Fraud
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed the findings during a February 4, 2025, Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, confirming that fraudulent National Identification Numbers (NINs) tied to Niger Republic nationals had been revoked. This purge is part of broader efforts to tighten border security and prevent exploitation of Nigeria’s identity framework.
A Recurring Challenge
The issue of illegal NIN registrations first made headlines in October 2022 when Nigerian military authorities arrested fake NIMC agents operating in border regions. These operatives targeted communities like the Gagamari IDP camp in Niger Republic, charging foreigners for illicit NIN registrations. Equipment seized during raids—including biometric machines and printers—highlighted the sophistication of the schemes.
Why the NIN Matters
The 11-digit NIN serves as the cornerstone of identity verification in Nigeria, linking individuals to biometric and demographic data. Its integrity is vital for both public services (e.g., social welfare) and private sector transactions. The Presidency stressed that database accuracy is non-negotiable to ensure aid reaches Nigerian citizens in need, particularly vulnerable groups.
A Step Toward Accountability
“The interior minister said NIMC is tidying up the database because they found over 6,000 people from Niger Republic who obtained NIN. But they have been wiped from the database,” a presidential source revealed. The cleanup underscores Nigeria’s resolve to combat identity fraud, bolster national security, and uphold trust in its digital systems.
As the Tinubu administration intensifies efforts to modernize social safety nets, this crackdown sends a clear message: Nigeria’s identity infrastructure will prioritize transparency and accountability to serve its citizens effectively.
