The announcement was made during the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration in Benin City, where the governor highlighted the importance of empowering women for the development of the state’s economy.
Gov. Okpebholo expressed that the N1 billion soft loan would help boost the businesses of market women, improve their livelihoods, and ultimately enhance the economic prosperity of Edo State. He emphasized that the loan was a token of appreciation for the hard work, dedication, and commitment of the women in contributing to the state’s growth.
“This is the first time I have witnessed such a colorful event at the Festival Hall since assuming office,” Gov. Okpebholo remarked. He underscored the crucial role of women in driving progress, stating, “We can do nothing as men without women. When a memo came before me about the soft loan, I quickly approved N1 billion for our market women.”
The process of loan disbursement is already underway, with relevant financial institutions being engaged to ensure that the funds are provided directly to Edo women. The governor expressed confidence in the integrity and commitment of the women, particularly their unwavering support during elections.
Edesili Anani Okpebholo, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Edo State, also addressed the gathering, encouraging women to continue to speak up, push back against oppression, and ensure their voices are heard. She stressed the need for women to add value in their careers, communities, and all aspects of life.
She further commended Governor Okpebholo for his proactive approach in ensuring that no woman is left behind in the pursuit of equal opportunities and justice. Anani also referenced the 2025 IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” calling for a united effort to end systemic inequalities, violence against women, and economic disparity that hinder women’s progress.
The 2025 IWD celebration served as a powerful reminder of the importance of women’s contributions to global progress, while calling for transformative action to dismantle barriers hindering women’s advancement.
