CurrentReport blog The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has clarified the delay in implementing the N70,000 minimum wage agreed upon by organized labor and the Federal Government. The NLC rejected the Abia State government’s proposal, which fell below the approved N70,000.
Speaking on the issue, Governor Alex Otti explained that the team his administration set up is awaiting further engagement with the NLC. However, the NLC, led by Chairman Okoro Ogbonnaya, confirmed they are waiting for directives from the NLC National Council regarding consequential adjustments.
Ogbonnaya revealed that the Abia State government’s offer was lower than the agreed N70,000, which the labor team rejected. Speaking to FLO 94.9 FM, he emphasized that the N70,000 minimum wage for workers on Level 1, Step 1 is non-negotiable. The NLC’s focus now is on securing consequential adjustments for workers across various levels.
He also acknowledged that while the Wage Award, different from the Minimum Wage, is already being paid by the state government, the NLC remains firm on its demand for the full N70,000 wage.
