Speaking at the Umuahia township stadium during the inauguration of the Governor’s Secondary Schools Unity Games, Otti emphasized the importance of sports in youth development and announced initiatives to bolster the sports ecosystem.
One of the key directives issued by Governor Otti is the regularization of inter-house sports in secondary schools throughout the state. This move aims to foster a culture of sporting excellence from a grassroots level, encouraging participation and talent development among students. Furthermore, Otti highlighted the collaborative efforts between the State Ministry of Youths and Sports and the Ministry of Education to reintegrate Physical and Health Education into school curriculums.
Governor Otti affirmed his commitment to elevating sports to a professional level within the state, attracting both local and foreign investors to explore opportunities in sports development. The reactivation of the Nsulu Games Village in Isiala Ngwa North stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to providing infrastructure and support for athletes.
The governor unveiled plans for a pilot phase of the sports programme, which will focus on establishing model sports centers in communities and urban neighborhoods. These centers will serve as hubs for nurturing young talent, providing training, and facilitating exposure to life-changing opportunities for aspiring athletes under the mentorship of seasoned professionals.
Mr. Nwaobilor Analaba, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for his proactive measures in procuring sports equipment, revitalizing grassroots games, and lifting the ban on the Umuahia township stadium, imposed by the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). Additionally, Mr. Obioma George, the Abia State Director of Sports, revealed that a total of 1,840 students are participating in 24 different sports disciplines, showcasing the breadth of talent and enthusiasm within the state.
