CurrentReport Blog The Abia State Ministry of Health has issued a stern warning to individuals and groups conducting unauthorised medical outreaches after several attendees of a free medical program in Abiriba, Ohafia Local Government Area, were hospitalised.
In a press release on Sunday, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, confirmed that the organisers of the outreach failed to secure approval from the state government. He described the event as illegal and cautioned against the distribution of medications by uncertified persons.
Drug Reactions Spark Concern
The medical outreach, held on Saturday, resulted in adverse drug reactions among participants, with many rushed to hospitals after experiencing medical emergencies. Preliminary investigations suggest that medications distributed during the event caused the reactions.
Professor Uche assured the public that affected individuals are receiving treatment at designated public health facilities, stating:
“Our dedicated healthcare personnel are working tirelessly to stabilise and treat the victims.”
Unauthorised Medical Activities Deemed Illegal
The Health Commissioner reiterated that all medical outreaches in Abia State must be approved by the Ministry of Health to ensure public safety. He warned that those who bypass this requirement will face legal action.
“The Abia State Ministry of Health is deeply concerned about the high risk posed by unauthorised healthcare activities. We urge the public to avoid engaging with unapproved healthcare events,” he added.
Public Safety Advisory
The Ministry has called on residents to exercise caution and verify the credentials of any individual or organisation offering medical services. This move is part of the state government’s efforts to protect public health and prevent further incidents.
