CurrentReport Blog In a recent statement, Abuja-based human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi has issued a strong warning to social media users, urging them to avoid defamation and cyberbullying, whether intentional or unintentional. Olajengbesi stressed that cyberbullying is a serious offense that can have devastating effects, even endangering lives.
He further called on his colleagues in the legal profession to make it a priority to advise their clients about the consequences of defamation and cyberbullying. According to Olajengbesi, the emotional toll of social media bullying has led to severe cases of depression, with some victims even losing their lives.
“This is an appeal to our colleagues and friends in the legal profession: let us normalize the idea of advising our clients about cyberbullying as a serious offense that can endanger lives,” Olajengbesi stated.
He emphasized the importance of educating the public about the legal implications of defamation, which can lead to both criminal and civil penalties. While he remains a strong advocate for freedom of speech, Olajengbesi expressed concern about how often the boundaries of this freedom are overlooked in Nigeria.
With the rise of social media usage, cases of cyberbullying and online defamation have become more prevalent, making it vital for users to be aware of the legal limits of their online behavior.
