Akwa Ibom Police Confirm 10-Year-Old Boy in Custody Over Alleged Defilement

CurrentReport Blog The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed that a 10-year-old boy, Bright Okon James, is in custody over allegations of defiling a 3-year-old girl.

In a press release on Saturday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, stated that the minor was taken into custody following evidence from an ongoing investigation, including a medical report.

Boy Allegedly Admits to the Crime

According to DSP John, the suspect voluntarily admitted to the offence without any form of coercion. She dismissed viral reports claiming the boy was illegally detained and assured that due process was being followed.

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command under the leadership of CP Baba Mohammed Azare remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served in line with due process.”

She also confirmed that the suspect will be charged to court on Monday, February 10, 2025.

No Trial by Ordeal – Police

The police dismissed allegations of trial by ordeal, emphasizing that such practices are criminal under Nigerian law.

“There was no trial by ordeal in this matter. The case is being handled legally, and we urge the public to avoid spreading misinformation.”

Public Urged to Allow Legal Process to Take Its Course

DSP John appealed to the public to stop spreading false information and allow the police to conduct their investigation professionally and lawfully.
