CurrentReport Blog The Anambra State chapter of the Labour Party has elected Jude Umejiego as its governorship candidate for the November 8, 2025 election in a factional primary amid internal party disputes.
The Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State has held a factional primary election, producing Hon. Jude Umejiego as its candidate for the upcoming November 8, 2025 governorship election.
This development follows a previously conducted primary where Dr. George Moghalu emerged as the party’s candidate. However, the latest primary underscores the deepening factional crisis within the party’s state chapter.
In the fresh contest held on Thursday, Umejiego polled 180 votes, defeating Mr. John Nwosu, who garnered 69 votes. Nwosu had earlier pulled out of the initial primary citing irregularities and accusing the Julius Abure-led national leadership of incompetence. He referenced the Supreme Court’s sack of the faction as a basis for disputing the legitimacy of the earlier exercise.
Sunday Okereke, the acting chairman of the electoral committee, declared Umejiego winner, saying:
“With the powers conferred on me by the Electoral Act 2022 and the guidelines of our party, I hereby declare and return Hon. Jude Umejiego as the duly elected candidate of Labour Party for the November 8, 2025 election.”
In his acceptance speech, Umejiego, who currently serves in the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha South 2 Constituency, expressed confidence in LP’s ability to win the election.
“We will use Anambra State as a model to showcase the Labour Party’s plan to move Nigeria from consumption to production,” he said.
He also unveiled his running mate, Hon. Henry Mbachu, another member of the State Assembly representing Awka South 1 Constituency.
The internal leadership tussle and emergence of multiple candidates now cast uncertainty on LP’s chances and cohesion ahead of the governorship polls in Anambra.
