CurrentReport Blog Oyo State was once again the site of a major fuel tanker accident this morning, March 31, 2025, when a petrol tanker overturned in the Galilee area of Orile Igbon along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Express Road. The tanker, which was carrying 40,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), lost control and veered off the road, tumbling into a nearby ditch and spilling its contents.
According to the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, the Ogbomoso Fire Station was alerted at exactly 6:36 am and quickly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency crews found the DAF trailer tanker, registered SUL 698 XP from Niger, overturned with petrol spilling from the wreckage.
“We immediately blanketed the area with a foam compound to neutralize the flammability of the spilled fuel and to prevent any ignition from nearby flames,” Akinyinka said in a statement. Firefighters are currently on standby to monitor the situation and ensure no further hazards arise.
The Nigerian Police from the Orile Igbon Division have also been deployed to the scene to secure the area and provide safety for the public and responders.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a similar occurrence just days ago when another petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of PMS overturned in the same state. This marks the third major tanker accident in Oyo this year, with the first taking place on March 18, 2025, when another tanker carrying 45,000 litres of petrol fell into a ditch.
Authorities are urging for greater safety measures to prevent such accidents from becoming a recurring issue.
