CurrentReportBlog Nurain Mumuni, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on President Bola Tinubu to involve the African Union (AU) or the United Nations (UN) to address the escalating tensions between Nigeria and Niger Republic.
Mumuni made this statement through his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, in a press release made available on Sunday. His remarks follow allegations by Niger’s Head of State, General Abdourahamane Tiani, that France is financially supporting Nigeria to establish a military base in Borno State.
Call for Diplomatic Mediation
In response to the allegations, Mumuni highlighted the need for diplomatic, political, and military strategies to defuse the situation. He suggested involving neutral third parties like the AU, UN, or trusted nations to mediate and promote dialogue between the two countries.
“Direct negotiations and independent investigations into such allegations are essential to prevent escalations that could threaten regional peace,” Mumuni stated.
Potential Impact on Regional Security
The APC chieftain, who is also a security expert, warned that accusations of state-sponsored terrorism could destabilize the region, undermining peace and security initiatives.
“Similar accusations in the past have had significant ramifications for regional security, reflecting the complex interplay between politics and security in volatile areas,” he noted.
Proposed Conflict Resolution Measures
Mumuni outlined several strategies to address the crisis, including:
- Conducting independent investigations to establish facts and accountability.
- Issuing public statements to clarify positions and restore public trust.
- Implementing confidence-building measures such as joint military exercises or intelligence-sharing agreements.
- Establishing rapid response mechanisms for conflict resolution.
He also emphasized the importance of involving international organizations to ensure a balanced and effective resolution process.
