CurrentReport Blog The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado, has praised the appointment of Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), describing it as a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s respect for seniority within the judiciary.

Senator Lado made this statement in Abuja on Wednesday while reacting to the Senate’s screening of the newly appointed CJN. He emphasized that Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment did not provoke any discontent among the judiciary’s hierarchy, highlighting her qualifications and the President’s adherence to the established guidelines for judicial appointments.

“The appointment of Justice Kekere-Ekun as the CJN is a clear demonstration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to upholding the principles of seniority and merit in the judiciary,” Lado stated while addressing journalists at the National Assembly. “This choice reflects her pedigree and the President’s respect for the guidelines of appointment in the judiciary.”

Lado further commended President Tinubu’s efforts to revamp the judiciary, pointing to the recent appointment of 11 justices to the Supreme Court bench, which has now reached its full complement of 21 justices for the first time in history. This move, according to him, underscores the administration’s dedication to ensuring the judiciary’s efficiency and capacity to deliver justice promptly.

“The appointment of these justices is a testament to the President’s vision of a judiciary that ensures not only speedy dispensation of justice but also that every Nigerian receives fair treatment,” he said. “Additionally, the President’s approval of the bill to increase the salaries of judicial officers is part of his broader strategy to strengthen the judiciary.”

Senator Lado also praised the 10th Senate for its support in the swift screening and confirmation of the new CJN, stating that it reflects the Senate’s commitment to collaborating with the Executive branch to achieve the goals of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The speedy screening and confirmation of the CJN by the Senate shows their dedication to working with the Executive to deliver the dividends of democracy to all Nigerians,” Lado remarked.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun’s appointment as the CJN is widely regarded as a positive step towards enhancing the credibility and effectiveness of Nigeria’s judicial system. Her leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus on judicial reforms and the efficient administration of justice across the country.
