CurrentReport Blog Arsenal have booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after a commanding 2-1 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night, sealing a 5-1 aggregate victory.
Mikel Arteta’s side arrived in Spain with a comfortable 3-0 advantage from the first leg and delivered a composed performance to eliminate the 14-time European champions on their home turf.
The Gunners had the perfect opportunity to increase their aggregate lead when they were awarded a penalty in the first half, but Bukayo Saka’s weak spot-kick was comfortably saved by Thibaut Courtois.
Saka made up for the miss after the break, calmly lifting the ball over Courtois to all but guarantee Arsenal’s progression. Real Madrid briefly threatened a comeback when Vinicius Junior capitalized on a defensive error between David Raya and William Saliba to score, but Gabriel Martinelli responded swiftly, racing through to restore Arsenal’s two-goal cushion on the night.
With this result, Arsenal continue their impressive European campaign and will face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals — a side they beat 2-0 during the group stage.
