CurrentReport Blog The Yola Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s failure to honor agreements dating back several years. The ASUU Yola Zone, which consists of six institutions including Modibbo Adama University Yola, University of Maiduguri, and Adamawa State University Mubi, has accused the government of repeatedly reneging on pacts meant to improve the nation’s public university system.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the ASUU Yola Zonal Chairman, Dani Mamman, the union specifically called on the government to implement the 2022 agreement, which had resulted in the suspension of a previous strike. The union criticized the government for its negligence, which they say continues to negatively impact the future of Nigerian students.
“The failure of the government to implement multiple agreements between 2013 and 2022 has hindered industrial harmony in public universities,” ASUU Yola Zone stated, calling for urgent government action.
The union issued a 21-day ultimatum on August 21, 2024, demanding the resolution of ongoing issues. However, no substantial progress has been made, leading the union to warn of potential strike action if the government fails to meet its demands within the additional two-week grace period recently issued.
ASUU Yola Zone also highlighted the Federal Government’s spending priorities, questioning why funds are available for non-educational expenses like the renovation of the vice president’s residence and purchasing luxury vehicles for lawmakers, yet scarce for improving the university system that educates future leaders.
If no agreement is reached after the two-week ultimatum, ASUU has vowed to resume its industrial action, asserting that the government should bear the blame for any resulting disruption in the nation’s education sector.
