CurrentReport Blog The 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu for its handling of the fuel subsidy, blaming it for Nigeria’s current economic woes. Atiku expressed his concerns following the latest increase in fuel prices announced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
NNPCL recently adjusted the pump price of petrol, raising it from N897 to N1,030 per litre in Abuja and from N855 to N998 in Lagos. This hike has further deepened the financial hardship faced by Nigerians, triggering widespread frustration.
Atiku, reacting to the development, took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to voice his disapproval of Tinubu’s approach to managing fuel subsidy removal. He attributed the current economic crisis and escalating inflation to the administration’s “haphazard and disingenuous” policies.
He wrote: “The haphazard and disingenuous approach of the current administration to fuel subsidy management has been the reason we are in this current economic crisis in the country. As things stand, there will be no let up in the escalating inflation rate, which is drowning the material well-being of Nigerians.”
Atiku also expressed concern over what he described as Tinubu’s lack of responsiveness to the plight of Nigerians, stating, “It is even more worrying that T-pain is undisturbed by the hardship in the country.”
The fuel price hike comes amid a broader economic struggle, with rising inflation and increased costs of living placing immense pressure on citizens. Many have voiced their concerns over the government’s silence and perceived inaction in addressing these economic challenges.
