CurrentReport Blog Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has celebrated International Women’s Day by highlighting the crucial role women play in society. During his speech on Saturday, Gov. Alia described women as the “cradle of life,” emphasizing their indispensable contributions to families, communities, and the economy.

Speaking on the theme “Advance Action,” Gov. Alia stressed the importance of education for the girl child, describing it as the “most powerful weapon against oppression and relegation.” He called on all stakeholders to accelerate efforts in achieving gender equality and empowering women, especially in addressing the slow pace of progress for women in various sectors.

The governor noted that women in Benue have vital roles in farming, trade, lawmaking, teaching, medicine, nursing, and policymaking. He recognized that without their active participation, the state’s economy would stall and communities would weaken. Gov. Alia urged men to respect and value the roles of women, emphasizing that “without women, our economy would suffer, and our families would lose direction.”

Gov. Alia also reflected on the challenges women face, such as unequal access to education, early marriages, and harmful cultural practices. He called for urgent action to change these narratives and improve the lives of women and girls in the state.

As part of his administration’s commitment to women’s empowerment, Gov. Alia highlighted the inclusion of several female appointees in key decision-making roles. He also announced that the 2025 state budget would prioritize women’s empowerment programs. Grants and soft loans will be provided to women through cooperative groups to help them start businesses, engage in agriculture, and enhance their economic independence.

The governor reiterated his belief that investing in women’s education, empowerment, and upliftment is not just a moral duty but a vital step toward a brighter and more prosperous future for the state. He emphasized that every child, regardless of gender or background, should have access to quality education, which he considered essential for the state’s growth and development.

Gov. Alia’s remarks serve as a strong reminder of the need for collective action in advancing gender equality, ending harmful practices, and ensuring that women and girls have equal opportunities to thrive in all aspects of life.
