The evacuation and burial were executed by the diligent efforts of the Benue State Sanitation Agency (BENSESA), following the approval granted by Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of BSUTH, Dr. Terungwa Hwande, disclosed this significant development to journalists in Makurdi on Tuesday. Dr. Hwande expressed gratitude to Governor Alia for his prompt action, which facilitated the swift disposal of these bodies, some of which had languished in the mortuary for up to five years.
Highlighting the pressing need for action, Dr. Hwande emphasized the grave risks posed by these unclaimed corpses to public health. He underscored the potential for epidemic outbreaks and the emergence of mutant diseases, urging immediate intervention to avert such threats.
The hospital meticulously followed due process in coordinating the evacuation and burial procedures. Extensive advertising through print and electronic media channels, coupled with formal letters to security agencies and relevant ministries, ensured comprehensive outreach and cooperation in this critical endeavor.
The mass burial of the evacuated bodies took place at the public cemetery in Makurdi, marking the culmination of concerted efforts to mitigate health risks and uphold community well-being.
