CurrentReport Blog Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress, Onyeka Onwenu, has passed away at the age of 72. Ms. Onwenu reportedly died on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital, Lagos, after collapsing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli.
An eyewitness confirmed the tragic news, stating that Ms. Onwenu had just performed before she slumped. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she could not be revived. The cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
Born on January 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned over four decades. She was a multifaceted artist, renowned for her contributions to music, acting, journalism, and politics. Her music, which included hits like “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe,” often addressed social and political issues, blending genres such as highlife, reggae, and pop.
Dubbed “The Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press, Onwenu also served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in 2013.
Onwenu’s legacy as a trailblazer in the Nigerian entertainment industry and her contributions to social and political discourse will be remembered fondly.
