CURRENT REPORTS BLOG: In a significant development, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago has sentenced Jacob Olalekan Ponle, popularly known as Woodberry, to eight years and three months in prison. Woodberry, a notorious fraudster, was convicted for orchestrating a multimillion-dollar fraud.  On July 11, Judge Robert Gettleman handed down the sentencing for Jacob Olalekan Ponle, alias Woodberry, in the federal court. The judge ordered Woodberry to serve a prison term of eight years and three months. This stern punishment reflects the seriousness of his involvement in coordinating a large-scale fraud operation.

Woodberry gained notoriety after his arrest on June 10, 2020, alongside Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas. Hushpuppi, who was also involved in internet fraud, was sentenced to 11 years in prison late last year. Woodberry’s arrest and subsequent trial marked a significant blow to cybercriminal activities, highlighting law enforcement’s determination to combat fraudulent schemes. Judge Gettleman, presiding over the case, ruled that Woodberry would be committed to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a total term of 100 months. The ruling emphasizes the severity of Woodberry’s crimes, making it clear that he will face the consequences of his actions.

Woodberry’s sentencing came after he reached a plea bargain in April. As a result, seven counts against him were dismissed, and he was convicted on one count of fraud. While the details of the plea bargain have not been disclosed, it likely played a role in reducing the number of charges brought against him.
In addition to his prison sentence, Woodberry faces deportation to Nigeria. This underscores the cross-border nature of his criminal activities and highlights the cooperation between U.S. and Nigerian authorities in combatting international fraud.
