Calvin Bassey Reveals Why He Chose to Play for Nigeria Over England and Italy

The 25-year-old, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, moved to England at a young age and was approached by both European nations. However, he made his decision to play for Nigeria in 2021 after being inspired by the Super Eagles’ performance against Lionel Messi’s Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Bassey: “Watching Nigeria vs. Argentina Made Me Choose the Super Eagles”

In an interview with NBC Sports, Bassey revealed that his love for Nigeria’s footballing spirit grew stronger after watching the Super Eagles take on Messi’s Argentina in a thrilling 2-1 defeat during the World Cup.

“I think it was just seeing the greatest player to ever play, playing against my team. [Nigeria] lost 2-1,”Bassey said.

“One of my teammates, Kenneth Omeruo, played that game. Just watching that game, I wanted to be in that position.”

Bassey emphasized that he always understood the passion and pride that comes with representing Nigeria and wasted no time accepting the opportunity when it came.

“I know how big of a nation Nigeria is and how much pride comes with playing for them. I just worked hard. When I got the opportunity, I didn’t take time [to decide] — I just knew that I wanted to play for Nigeria.”

Bassey’s Impact With the Super Eagles

Since making his international debut, Calvin Bassey has earned 29 caps for Nigeria and has become a key player in the squad.

He was also part of the Super Eagles team that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, showcasing his importance in the team’s defense.

A Key Player for Fulham and Nigeria

At the club level, Bassey has been impressive for Fulham in the English Premier League, earning praise for his defensive abilities and composure on the ball.
