CURRENT REPORT BLOG The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, is championing a shift towards a non-kinetic approach in the ongoing battle against criminal elements in the country. During a lecture at the National Security Course in Abuja, Gen. Musa highlighted the success of this approach by noting that more than 2,000 Boko Haram terrorists voluntarily surrendered to the troops through non-kinetic efforts during the height of insurgency. Acknowledging the evolving nature of adversaries, he emphasized the military’s strategic use of both hard and soft power in counter-insurgency operations to effectively address emerging security challenges.

Furthermore, Gen. Musa provided insight into the positive outcomes of Operation Safe Corridor, revealing that between 2016 and 2017, over 2,000 Boko Haram members surrendered, with subsequent rehabilitation efforts. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Undiandeye, stressed the importance of understanding the dynamics of psychological operations and strategic communication in modern warfare. Undiandeye pointed out that strategic communication not only influences public opinion but also serves as a crucial tool for winning hearts and minds, ultimately contributing to national security and cohesion. The comprehensive approach advocated by Gen. Musa and Maj.-Gen. Undiandeye underscores the military’s commitment to adapting strategies to effectively combat insecurity in the country.
