Chairman of Edo State PDP Abducted by Gunmen

CurrentReport Blog The Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Aziegbemi, has reportedly been abducted by gunmen, sparking concerns across the political landscape. The incident occurred at approximately 7 pm on Friday, shortly after the expiration of the party’s State Working Committee.

A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Aziegbemi was kidnapped as he was about to enter his residence following a meeting with Governor Godwin Obaseki in Benin City. The abduction took place at the entrance of his house along Country Home Hotel Road, Benin City, with the perpetrators blocking his vehicle and forcibly taking him away while leaving the driver unharmed.

Notably, the PDP candidate for the upcoming September 21, 2024, governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, was scheduled to attend the meeting with the governor but was unable to do so due to prior commitments with party leaders in Uromi.

Sources suggest that the abducted chairman’s meeting with the governor focused on strategizing the establishment of a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs pending the election of a new executive.

Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor when contacted confirmed the incident however said ” That is confirmed, it is in the jurisdiction of New Etete Police Division, also known as Godwin Abbe Police Station, that is where it happened.

“The Commissioner of Police has given marching orders to the tactical teams of the operatives to go after the hoodlums and we pray that by the grace of God all hands are on deck and we will be able to rescue him unhurt”.
