CurrentReport Blog In a strong warning to the United States, China has urged the US to avoid engaging in any form of conflict, emphasizing that “such conflicts cannot be won.” The statement was issued by the Chinese Embassy in Washington via its official X account on Thursday, in response to recent remarks by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who suggested that the US is “prepared” for a potential war with China.

The Chinese Embassy cautioned the United States against viewing China through the lens of an “outdated Cold War mentality,” stating that such an approach only heightens tensions between the two nations. The post emphasized that China is not a mirror image of the United States’ hegemonic power and called on the US to stop attempting to “contain or go after China” under the guise of strategic competition.
The embassy’s post further asserted that regardless of the type of war—whether it be a tariff war, trade war, cold war, or hot war—such conflicts are “not to be fought and cannot be won.”
This warning comes after Hegseth’s comments during an appearance on Fox & Friends, where he responded to a previous post by the Chinese Embassy, claiming that the United States is “prepared” to go to war with China.
The escalating rhetoric from both sides underscores growing tensions between the world’s two largest economies, particularly over issues such as trade, military presence in the Pacific, and geopolitical influence.
