CurrentReport Blog In a decisive move, CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, has sanctioned several Uruguayan players following the chaotic aftermath of their Copa América semi-final match against Colombia. The match, which saw Colombia edge out Uruguay with a narrow 1-0 victory, was marred by an on-field altercation between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans, with the tensions boiling over after the final whistle.
Daily Post recalls that the incident was sparked by Uruguay’s star striker Darwin Núñez, who was at the centre of the melee following his team’s disappointing defeat. Jefferson Lerma’s first-half goal was enough to send Colombia into the final, a match they ultimately lost to Argentina, who claimed the championship title.
In response to the post-match violence, CONMEBOL has handed down the following suspensions to the Uruguayan players involved:
- Darwin Núñez: Suspended for 5 matches
- Rodrigo Bentancur: Suspended for 4 matches
- Mathias Olivera: Suspended for 3 matches
- Ronald Araujo: Suspended for 3 matches
- Josema Gimenez: Suspended for 3 matches
These sanctions are strictly applicable to international matches, meaning the players will serve their suspensions only during Uruguay’s national team fixtures.
