CurrentReport Blog Tragedy was averted on Friday night on Chukwunyere Street in Aba, as eight construction workers narrowly escaped death following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction.
The building, which was nearing completion, crumbled late Friday, causing immediate concerns that individuals might be trapped beneath the debris. Fortunately, according to local residents, the construction crew had finished their work for the day and left the site just before the collapse.
As of now, no official statements have been made regarding the cause of the collapse, and the contractor responsible for the project has yet to provide any explanation. Eyewitnesses and nearby residents suspect the use of substandard materials as a potential cause and have urged the Abia State Government to take decisive action against the use of poor-quality materials and unqualified builders in the construction industry.
In response to the incident, officials from the Aba South Town Planning Authority have sealed off the site to conduct a thorough investigation.
This incident comes on the heels of a similar tragedy in June 2024, when a three-storey building under construction in Obingwu, Ukwa West LGA of Abia State, collapsed, resulting in the deaths of five workers. This recurrence highlights the pressing need for stringent oversight and regulation in building practices to prevent further loss of life and property.
